May 15, 2003 - Ethics and Urban Development: The Role of Non-Profit Organizations
This colloquium brought together representatives from local non-profit organizations. The event was jointly sponsored by the Cornwall Center, the Prudential Business Ethics Center and the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration.

April 21-22, 2003 - Conference on the Pharmaceutical Industry
In association with the Health Institute of New Jersey and with the support of Johnson & Johnson’s Office of Government Affairs and Policy, the Center held a conference addressing moral and political issues in the areas of testing, intellectual property protection and access to medication, and bioethics. Leading experts, including industry representatives, public officials, academics, and commentators on the industry served on the panels.

April 3, 2003 - Prudential Lecture at Rutgers
The lecturer was Professor Robert Phillips, of the University of San Diego. Professor Phillips, one of the most prominent young scholars in the field, earned his Ph.D. in the highly regarded business ethics program of the Darden School of the University of Virginia.

March 1, 2003 - Conference: "Our Homes, Our Environment: Environmental Justice Where We Live and Work"
The Center partnered with the Philosophy Department and UMDNJ in a conference that addressed the moral responsibility of governments, businesses, and individuals for a sustainable and healthy environment. The conference was free and open to the public.

Winter 2002 - Spring 2003 - Survey of Ethics in New Jersey Businesses
A Rutgers Ph.D. student assisted the design of a survey to assess attitudes about business ethics among New Jersey businesspeople.

February 27, 2003 - Colloquium: Ethics and Urban Development: The Role of Higher Education
This was the first in a series of colloquia exploring the ethical responsibilities of community stakeholders in urban development. Our partner is the Cornwall Center for Metropolitan Studies at Rutgers.

Danielle Warren and Ed Hartman will lead a half-day session in this program, which is sponsored by the Institute for Women’s Leadership and the Center for Women and Work at Rutgers.

December 4, 2002 - Michael Santoro at Princeton University
China's transformation from a closed, totalitarian state into an open and liberalizing one is one of the most important topics for contemporary social scientists. Professor Santoro was part of a Princeton China Seminar Series panel discussion on "New Approaches to Human Rights in China," sponsored by Princeton's East Asia Department.

November 12, 2002 - Panel Discussion on Sweatshops
The panel, chaired by Prof. Michael Santoro, included Prof. Kaushik Basu of Cornell University, one of the world's most distinguished economists writing on global labor rights, as well as the leaders of the two most prominent NGOs working in the global labor rights field.

November 7, 2002 - Prudential Lecture
Professor Timothy Fort from the business school at the University of Michigan, spoke on "Scandals, Security, Shareholders, and Stakeholders." He also discussed his research with Rutgers faculty and graduate students.

May 14, 2002 - Undergraduate Business Ethics Case Competition
Teams of students in Professor Robinson Lilienthal’s business ethics course gave presentations on various aspects of the Enron case. Dr. Harold Davis, Professor Michael Rohr (Philosophy Department, Rutgers), and Paul McAuliffe, Esq. (Federal Reserve) were judges in the competition, and awarded prizes to the top three teams.

May 2, 2002 - Conference on Enron and the Future of the Accounting Profession
In association with the Department of Accounting and the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Center sponsored a conference that considered the legal and ethical ramifications of the Enron debacle and its probable impact on the accounting profession. CPAs, faculty members, and others heard a keynote address by Robert Elliott, former President of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, presentations by members of the Accounting Department, and a panel.

March 2, 2002 - Conference on Equity and Excellence in Metropolitan Education
The Center joined the Rutgers Department of Philosophy and UMDNJ in sponsoring a conference on equal educational opportunity. Topics addressed included where moral accountability lies and what can be done.

Summer 2002 - Support for Faculty Research
Professors Danielle Warren and David Hess, fellows of the Center, and Michael Stouder, a Ph.D. student, are conducting research on ethics on the trading floor, corporate governance, and ethics in entrepreneurship. Their research will be published in articles in business ethics journals and will be publicized through presentations to academic and corporate audiences.
